About the Image to Grayscale Converter

The Image to Grayscale tool runs entirely in your browser. Drop or select an image, choose the intensity of the effect, and click Convert. Each pixel is converted to a luminance value using the standard weighted formula (0.299·R + 0.587·G + 0.114·B), which preserves perceived brightness. The intensity slider blends the grayscale result with the original, so 100% is fully gray and lower values retain more color. Download the result as a PNG. Nothing is uploaded to a server — everything happens locally with JavaScript on your device.

How to use the converter

  1. Click the drop zone or drop an image file onto it.
  2. Adjust the Grayscale intensity slider — 100% for fully grayscale, lower for a partial effect.
  3. Click Convert to render the effect onto the image.
  4. Click Download to save the result as a PNG, or Clear to start over.

Frequently asked questions

Why use the 0.299/0.587/0.114 weights? These values match how human vision perceives the brightness of red, green, and blue, so the result keeps the same perceived lightness as the original.

What is the output format? The download is a PNG file. This preserves transparency and avoids compression artifacts.

Does this tool upload my images? No. All processing happens locally in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.

Can I get a partial grayscale effect? Yes. Lower the intensity slider below 100% to blend grayscale with the original colors.
